Photek, the stage name of Rupert Parkes, stands mercilessly on the precipice. As a sound scientist who has been pushing both his sounds and his fans’ expectations to the absolute limits since 1994, he floods the footnotes of electronica like MP3s flood your hard drive.
He was there when Goldie called it drum & bass, but to this day he prefers the term jungle. His album Modus Operandi, released in 1997 and including Ni-ten ichi Ryu, then coined the typical ‘Photek style’: atmospheric pieces with cool, highly complex beats, sometimes accompanied by minimalist synthesiser melodies, but contrasting with the sound of a plucked double bass ‘Modus Operandi’. As a conceptual experiment with time and emotional atmosphere, it pushed the drum & bass concept to its limits. His follow-up albums form& function also have cult status. He also released various maxis and albums under pseudonyms such as Special Forces, Studio Pressure on his own label PP, and Aquarius and Sentinel on Good Looking. In 2012, another album by the maestro Photek was released on Dj Kicks.
His remixes for Björk / EBTG and Nine Inch Nails also have cult status in the drum and bass scene. He has also produced various movie soundtracks.
In 2025, he released his new drum and bass album as a box set… Track from it: Breath Control.

JUR Records was founded in 1991 by the then 16-year-old Semtex and is still his passion today. Semtex sees another parallel to Goldie’s Metalheadz label in addition to the founding date: the family aspect is especially important to him. It’s not just about shared musical interests, but also about friendship. Over the years, the crew has grown, with new faces joining or leaving. To date, around 80 DJs have been or are members of JUR. JUR Records is not only a label and promoter, but also a platform for young, talented DJs to present their music. Many DJs who now have their own labels made their first appearance at JUR. Today, JUR Records can look back on over 1000 organized parties, various open airs, Love Mobiles at the Street Parade and other events.
Venue
The Moods jazz club was opened in 1992 on the initiative of Zurich musicians at the former Selnau train station and will celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2022.
Moods has been in an attractive location in the Schiffbau since 2000. This includes the stylish bar, where music fans and musicians often chat and debate late into the night.
