ROYAL

Cinema – parking spaces? – Palace of Culture! – Building office? – Palace of Culture!

The Royal Baden has an eventful history behind it. The oldest free-standing cinema in Switzerland was opened in 1913 by the resolute Parisian Marie Antoine against the will of the authorities. In 2011, the disused cinema almost had to make way for car parks, but after a successful petition, committed people transformed the Royal into a multimedia cultural centre for interim use. The cultural centre has taken the hearts of all visitors and artists by storm and is now indispensable. Thanks to the great and generous support of the population, politicians and businesses, the Royal was saved for the coming years in 2017 and the ‘Kulturhaus Royal’ association was able to sign a lease until the end of 2038! Together with external organisers and countless volunteers, the fourteen-member operating group puts on a wide-ranging cultural niche programme with lots of music, visual arts, theatre, literature, podiums, scandal films, flea markets, German courses and much more.
