Sedel

Since 1981, the Sedel Music Centre has been a hub for musicians from across the canton of Lucerne and for the alternative music scene. Contrary to popular belief, it was not a women’s prison, but a penal institution for both men and women. Thanks to the tireless efforts of many young people from Lucerne, the former prison was eventually converted into a cultural centre. You can read about exactly how the battle for the Sedel unfolded here.

Since its inception, the Sedel Music Centre has been organised and managed by the Lucerne Musicians’ Interest Group (ILM). The ILM is run by a board of directors and employs the four staff members at the Sedel.

Sedel is financed by rental income from rehearsal rooms, membership fees, concert proceeds and merchandise sales. In addition, the Sedel Commission (consisting of the member municipalities of Lucerne, Emmen, Ebikon, Horw and Meggen) provides financial support for the rehearsal space. There is a usage agreement for the Sedelhof with the canton of Lucerne.
